Text Box: This comprises the largest group undergoing orthodontic treatment. Treatment is carried out during this time as this is the period of greatest growth of the jaws. Treatment can be targeted at this growth to establish a good balance between the jaws and face, ultimately leading to an optimal functional and aesthetic result. There are many different methods, appliances and systems available to orthodontists. Below are listed just some of the more common appliances and systems used;

Text Box: Orthodontic Brackets Probably the most common orthodontic appliance seen. These brackets are bonded to the teeth. They provide a “handle” on the tooth and with the aid of the wires passing between them can be used to move the teeth. In order to look more fashionable coloured elastics are available to choose from.

Text Box: Head Gear This appliance is used for a number of reasons but essentially to restrain the growth of the upper jaw and bring the front teeth in. It is worn at night and also during the day. Much of the success of treatment depends on good cooperation with this appliance. Failure to cooperate may result in a poor final result or necessitate a drastic change in treatment plan.

Text Box: Expansion device This appliance is used to “expand” the upper jaw in order to make space for teeth or to correct asymmetries between the two jaws.

Text Box: Newer systems of brackets With the newer types of brackets (on the right) the wire running between the brackets is not held by an elastic (as shown above) but is “clipped” into place thus reducing friction and allowing a smaller force to be used and speeding up treatment time.

Text Box: Face Mask This appliance is used in a small percentage of cases where there is a deficiency in the upper jaw. It is used to “encourage” forward growth of the upper jaw and improve the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.
